History of International Women's Day
International Women's Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.

In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day on 8 March. Two years later, in December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed on any day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and national traditions. In adopting its resolution, the General Assembly recognized the role of women in peace efforts and development and urged an end to discrimination and an increase of support for women's full and equal participation.

International Women's Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe:

1909 The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.

1910 The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to build support for achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish Parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.

1911 As a result of the Copenhagen initiative, International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded women's rights to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.

1913-1914 International Women's Day also became a mechanism for protesting World War I. As part of the peace movement, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with other activists.

1917 Against the backdrop of the war, women in Russia again chose to protest and strike for "Bread and Peace" on the last Sunday in February (which fell on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). Four days later, the Czar abdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for women's rights and participation in the political and economic arenas. Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

The UN and Gender Equality

The Charter of the United Nations, signed in 1945, was the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men. Since then, the UN has helped create a historic legacy of internationally-agreed strategies, standards, programmes and goals to advance the status of women worldwide.

Over the years, the UN and its technical agencies have promoted the participation of women as equal partners with men in achieving sustainable development, peace, security, and full respect for human rights. The empowerment of women continues to be a central feature of the UN's efforts to address social, economic and political challenges across the globe. (United Nations)

Let's talk Oscars

One of my favorite things about watching the Oscars is the Red Carpet I believe it's Hollywoods biggest night where glamour is essential and classic style and elegance is preferred. Lets see how our lovely stars did on there choice of dress for the Oscar night.

I wish I had a photo of the back of Sarah Jessica Parker's dress because it was my favorite part of the dress i do love the yellow and silvery grey combination and the back was very elegant. I'm not sure about the neck though looks uncomfortable and how the heck is she keeping it up its so top heavy that is a mystery to me.
Zoe Saldana well Zoe I think you could have done better she has a great figure not sure why she chose this fluffy thing
Rachel Mc Adams looked gorgeous at first I couldnt decide because of the strange colors but I love this dress, the way it flows, beautiful design, still back and forth about that color pattern.
The top of this dress is a little tacky its a really pretty dress from the waist down but the top looks a little bit like lingerie Miley Cyrus did look very cute though.
Diane Kruger hmm I'm still not sure she looks elegant but the dress is a little strange its like ok lets combine every style in one.
LOVE IT!!!! I think Sandra Bullock looked so elegant and classy what a lovely choice just like a true hollywood star this was my favorite.
Carey Mulligan I think she looked so adorable with her cute little pixy haircut to this adorable black dress she looked very age appropriate and her fun dress gives her personality loved it.
Cameron Diaz looked so lovely in this glamorous dress even though she wasn't showing off her amazing long legs she looked so classy great job Cameron.
EEk Charlize Theron could have definately done better this fabric is all wrong it looks like it wrinkles so easily and what is up with the boobs of the dress really not a fan.
Alright still having trouble with Demi Moore's Dress the top i think is very lovely and reminds me of a ballet dancer's costume very graceful I don't like how it blends in with her skin and the ruffles are more subtle than some of the other dresses but it might have been even better to take it down one more notch.
JLO always very risky fashion sense im not sure that I like this one though kinda reminds me of a space age futuristic suit. The big hip ruffles is a little much, the top is the only part i kinda like.
Kate Winslet will always look lovely and classy no matter what she wears she just has that about her, and even though I think she looks gorgeous as always I'm not sure that I absolutely love this dress, I don't hate it but i don't love it she needs something that portrays her more.
This may seem a little harsh but thank God Kristen Stewart showered for this event she does look very elegant and feminine in this dress so props to her for cleaning up her style for the oscar night.
Elegant! there is no better way to describe the way this dress flows all this fabric draped around her I just think of an elegant ball gown when I look at Penelope Cruz in this dress.
Tina Fey looked so great in this dress she looked very classy and chic the dress seemed to suit her personality so great.
Job well done Queen Latifah you looked so elegant. Great color for her skin tone and very nice design for her figure.
Sci Fi lady Sigourni Weaver looked great choice age appropriate looked like a greek toga dress in red.
Molly Molly Molly, too trendy I can't blame her though she was a star in the 80s the strangest styles emerged in that decade it might have just stuck with her. Still love her for giving us The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. Wish her presentation wouldn't have been so awkward.
Katherine Bigalow not a fan of the dress but well done on being the first female to win best director.
She's adorable her dress was a great choice very glamorous but I think what made her look was her glow and excitement at the wonderment of being at the oscar's "hollywoods prom"
I still don't understand the ruffles in these dresses this trend is a little strange she looked lovely though simple color but very elegant.
Loved the flow of this dress and thet design not a huge fan of the little flower clump on her shoulder. Really think it would have been beautiful in a richer color like maybe an emerald green or something.
Amanda Seyfried looked alright in this dress im not sure why the chest area sticks out like that but there's room for improvement.
Robert Downy Jr. All i can do is laugh.
Also lets talk acceptance speeches there were two women that stood out so strongly for there acceptance speech Sandra Bullock did an excellent job almost brought me to tears as well as Mo'Nigues great job ladies. Least favorite speech was Sandy Powell for the costume design what a snob.

Classic Oscar Moments

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts of Sciences

How it Began:
In 1927 M-G-M’s studio chief Louis B Mayer decided he wanted to start an organization to benefit the entire film industry. He held a dinner at the Ambassador Hotel in LA for 36 people to give the proposal. The group supported the idea and by mid-march articles of the incorporation were presented and the first officers were elected, with Douglas Fairbanks as the president. On May 11, 1927 the first official organizational banquet was held, they initially decided on 5 branches: producers, actors, directors, writers, and technicians. That night the Academy also awarded the first honorary membership, to Thomas Edison.
The Birth of the Academy Awards:
One of the first Academy committees was Awards of Merit. The seven-person committee suggested to the Board in 1928 that awards be presented in 12 categories. The first Academy Awards were officially presented at a black-tie dinner at the Roosevelt on May 16, 1929, honoring achievements between August 1, 1927 and July 31, 1928.
The Academy’s Early Intitiative:
The Academy published its first book in 1928 – Report on Incandescent Illumination, based on a series of Academy-sponsored seminars attended by 150 cinematographers. A second book, Recording Sound for Motion Pictures, was published in 1931, based on a lecture series on sound techniques.
In 1930 the Academy developed a program to train Signal Corps. officers in the various aspects of motion picture production for the purpose of producing military training films. Years later at the start of World War II, the Academy’s Research Council arranged for major studios to produce training films on a non-profit basis. Over 400 training shorts and related featurettes were delivered to the armed services.
A new Academy publication, the Screen Achievement Records Bulletin, debuted in 1934 when the Writers Branch began publishing a bulletin of screen authorship records. It listed film production titles and complete credits for directors and writers.
In the late 1920s and the 1930s the Academy was active in industry politics and labor-management issues, with mixed results. In 1937, during Frank Capra’s time as president, the Academy rewrote its bylaws and moved further away from involvement in labor-management arbitrations and negotiations.
The Continued Growth:
A scholarship program for film students was established in the mid 1960s; starting in 1968, grants were awarded to film-related organizations and colleges for internships, film festivals and other projects. In 1972, the Academy began the National Film Information Service to offer access to library materials for historians, students and others outside Los Angeles. A year later, the Student Academy Awards Committee was established to recognize and encourage promising college and university filmmakers.
